Long-time Hernando Main Street Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Susan Fernandez has stepped down in her role as director and will become the new Member Services Manager with the DeSoto County Economic Development Council.

Deborah Morgan, who has acted in that capacity for 13 years and had the responsibilities of interaction with industrial officials and a leading role with the DeSoto County Foundation for Excellence in Education, is retiring as Office Administrator.

Fernandez announced Tuesday that Jesse Ingram Dement, current Member Services Coordinator for the Hernando Chamber, has been selected as the new Executive Director.

Board members voted unanimously in favor of Dement stepping into that role this past Friday.

Fernandez will begin her new role on Feb. 6.

"I'm excited to start a new challenge with the DeSoto County Economic Development Council and look forward to working with the team to further develop their already extensive member services offerings. I am fortunate to be joining such a respected organization that prides itself on quality service."

Jim Flanagan, President and CEO of the DeSoto County Economic Development Council, said he and the Council look forward to having Fernandez on board with the industrial recruitment and development organization.

"Susan's wealth of experience and industry knowledge will make her an asset to the DeSoto Council family," Flanagan said. "We view her appointment as a sign of our commitment to meeting our members' needs. I'm confident Susan will play a key role in our organization moving forward."

For her part, Dement said she is looking froward to her new role.

"Hernando is my hometown," Dement said. "I graduated from Hernando High School. I am so excited to be named as the Hernando Main Street Chamber of Commerce Director and grow my hometown."
