The new year brought a new tenant to The Accelerator at The University of Southern Mississippi as pharmaceutical distributor South Point Distributors LLC moved into the University’s technology park earlier this month.

South Point Distributors is an international wholesale pharmaceutical supplier of legend drugs, over-the-counter drugs, generic-brand drugs and a variety of health care products. The company operates not only in Mississippi, but in Florida and New Jersey as well.

“South Point Distributors is very pleased to be at The Accelerator in Hattiesburg, and we are excited about the partnership with The University of Southern Mississippi, Mississippi Polymer Institute and the School for Polymers and High Performance Materials” said Dr. Frank Chaviano, the company’s chief regulatory compliance officer. “We hope to expand our business at The Accelerator over the next year and attract other companies to the area during this expansion.”

Officially labeled The National Materials Science Innovation and Commercialization Accelerator, the incubator provides ample space for offices, laboratories and storage; the latest advances in technology and expert guidance for companies attempting to grow a business from the ground up.

The 60,000-square foot facility also houses the Mississippi Polymer Institute (MPI) which provides rapid prototyping, valuable analytical and physical testing capabilities, scale-up assistance and polymer processing expertise. There are currently eight tenants occupying space inside The Accelerator.

“It is an honor to have South Point Distributors choose The Accelerator for their business location, and it is a testimony to the value proposition afforded early stage companies by partnering with Southern Miss and MPI,” said MPI Director Dr. Bryan Brister. “Southern Miss has tremendous resources to bring to bear on behalf of early stage companies that can position them for commercial success. MPI takes seriously its leadership role in that process.”
