September 14, 2017

Hattiesburg, MS – The Mississippi Economic Development Council (MEDC) announced that Mary Catherine Davis won the 2017 Jimmy and Ray Heidel Economic Development Leadership Award on September 14, 2017.

The Ray Heidel Leadership Award was established in 1995 by the Mississippi Economic Development Council to honor the life and contributions to the profession by Ray Heidel.  In 1999 the name was changed to the Jimmy and Ray Heidel Economic Development Leadership Award to recognize Jimmy Heidel’s contributions to the profession on both the local and statewide levels. The Jimmy & Ray Heidel Economic Development Leadership Award is presented during True South Basic Economic Development Course at the University of Southern MS.   The purpose of the award is to foster further economic development practitioner leadership skills.

Mary Catherine Davis is an Extension Associate for Mississippi State University Delta Research & Extension Center in Stoneville. Through her position, she works with Delta Council, a regional economic development agency, in a number of capacities aimed at enhancing opportunities for the Delta region. Currently, she is engaged in two high profile Delta initiatives - the Delta work ready program and the Delta Strong mission, among many others.

Mary Catherine was raised on a farm in a small town where the Delta meets the hills. She attended Mississippi State University where she was an active member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2010. Soon after graduation, she relocated to Louisiana where she completed a Master of Fine Arts degree at Louisiana Tech University. After serving as Executive Director of the Greenville Arts Council and E.E. Bass Foundation in Greenville for several years, she made a decision to reroute her professional career path and use her background and skills to focus on community and regional development in the Delta. In 2016 she was hired by Mississippi State University through a cooperative agreement with Delta Council. She lives in Leland with her Walker Coonhound, Daisy, and is active in the community as a volunteer, leader and artist.
